The Renovation of the Overtoom

(December 30, 2001) This part of the Overtoom was finished recently. Only some new trees missing here! As you can see the tram stop is no longer in front of the camera; it was replaced some 100 meters to the right (direction city centre, in front of the RCA building.

(September 13 , 2001) Well ! As you can see the fences were finally removed last night, and our part of the Overtoom was paved with fresh asphalt. We miss the little tree though, that was in front of the house before the start of the renovation.

(June 12 , 2001) Sand ! It's like Renees Beach here... Right now the digging is in full progress. Parts of the old canal that were buried in the ground for over 100 years, is laying around. Unfortunately, the famous Tram Stop was rebuilt some 50 meters from here. And it won't come back to its old location.

(May 7, 2001) Finally! The renovation of this part of The Overtoom started today. What a mess! All traffic uses one lane. The J.P.Heijestraat is closed for both in- and outgoing traffic. On the cams you can see fences, machines, a lot of rubble and sand. And, if you're lucky, some guys working. In a few weeks they will start digging for the new sewer system.

(April 27, 2001) The start of the renovation works for this part of The Overtoom was delayed; it's planned now for June/July 2001. You can already see the building materials on the side walks...

(December 8, 2000) The renovation works across the street were finished; now we're waiting for this side to be taken care of!

(June 28, 2000) On the other side of the street one can see bulldozers, fences and building materials. Traffic has to use the tramway, so it is quite busy!

(April 9, 2000) Renovation of the Overtoom will start on May 2, 2000 and will last for about 2 years (!!).

(March 1, 2000) Latest news is to be found on http://www.oudwest.amsterdam.nl/plannen/overtoom.php (Dutch).

(January 21, 2000)  The tree has been removed, it was carefully put on a lorry, and driven away. See you next year!!

(January 15, 2000)  As you can see, municipality workers have dug out the tree in front of the Cam.

The 'excavation site' was then bordered by a red and white checkered ribbon, to prevent people from falling into the pit.

The tree will be transported soon to grounds where it will remain for one year. Some 36 trees on the Overtoom will be transported this way. Afterwards all trees will be replanted in their previous locations.

From May 2000 the Overtoom will be renovated: this means the road will be completely opened for a new and modern sewage system, new pavements, new tram rails and some new trees.

It will be quite a problem for the traffic because the Overtoom is a major road connecting the inner City with the Ring.

Further the inhabitants will loose their parking space which is short already.

I'll keep you informed of the progress!
